Theatr Clywd

Mold, Wales

Creating a greener and more sustainable home for Welsh theatre.

A landmark redevelopment project to create a green and inspirational home for theatre in North Wales. Theatr Clwyd was built in 1976 by Clwyd County Council to serve North Wales with world-class theatre and arts. The last 45 years have taken their toll – the roof leaks, the mechanics and electrics are at the end of life, the audience areas can no longer match the excellent work on stage, and the disabled access is terrible. Their theatre-making teams work in old and unsuitable facilities and the building doesn’t meet modern health and safety standards.

The existing theatres are well-loved, they don’t need completely changing, just refurbishing. We are making the seating more comfortable, increasing legroom, improving the layout and installing new carpets, better ventilation and heating. The stage facilities in the theatres will be upgraded, the stage mechanics and flying systems in both spaces will be replaced and improved, the stage floors strengthened and refurbished, and the stagelighting and audiovisual systems will be completely rewired.

Backstage, a new set-building workshop, rehearsal spaces and wardrobe-making rooms will be added, to bring all production facilities back onto the one site. Public areas will be opened up to be lighter and more accessible including a new bar and box office, huge new glass windows to the front and an outdoor terrace, refurbished gallery spaces and cinema; lift access improved, and a new fit-for-purpose kitchen to support a relocated first-floor restaurant.

Theatr Clwyd’s award-winning health and well-being projects make a big difference to vulnerable people in their community, such as Singing for Lung Health and Mental health workshops. At the heart of the redevelopment is a health and wellbeing suite with specialist changing facilities and a sensory garden. These spaces will be wholly focused on helping those in the local community who have specific needs that will benefit from the ever-growing arts, health and well-being work at Theatr Clwyd.
