...a hub for the school and a focus for excellence in the performing arts

The Leys School

Project summary

The Great Hall at the Leys School has replaced the previous theatre on the school campus. In response to the school’s challenging brief, Charcoalblue and the architects designed an intimate proscenium theatre which can be transformed from a 340-seat drama and music space into an assembly room for up to 600 students. The rear wall of the stalls can be opened up and the seating at this level retracted to reveal a large flat floor which can be used for other staging formats, as well as lectures and examinations. To complement the Great Hall, a 100-seat studio theatre was incorporated into the new arts centre.

As well as advising on the general planning of the building and the performance spaces, Charcoalblue provided advice on the acoustics and designing the theatre technical systems - stagelighting, audiovisual and stage engineering - for both spaces.
