...A new large-scale flexible theatre to rejuvenate the 1930’s cinema

Storyhouse, Chester

Project summary

Charcoalblue have worked with long-time collaborators, Bennetts Architects to design Storyhouse, a significant new arts and theatre complex and the largest public building in Chester. Storyhouse, constructed over two and a half years, brings a theatre and cinema back to the city after 10 years. It saw the incorporation of the Grade II listed 1936 Odeon cinema and a contemporary extension in brick and clad in copper.

The project includes a new adaptable 500-800 seat theatre, able to transform itself from a summer festival stage into a winter touring proscenium house; and a new 150-seat studio venue located above the theatre. Inside the old cinema auditorium, the complex includes a new cinema screen, cafe and the city's relocated library.

Charcoalblue provided full consultancy services, leading the design of the flexible performance spaces and designs for the technical systems. The resulting theatre and studio provide some of the most innovative performance spaces in the country and will serve the creative community of the area and beyond for decades to come.
