...an intimate thrust-stage space for teaching drama and technical theatre

St Paul's School, Barnes

Project summary

St Paul’s School is located in west London, along the banks of the River Thames. The school is one of the country’s most highly-regarded independent schools. The school occupies a campus constructed mainly in the 1960s using a then-innovative pre-cast construction method. The school has recently undertaken an ambitious rebuilding project to replace some of those buildings.

Charcoalblue was hired to assist Nicholas Hare Architects on the theatre and acoustic designs of the new Drama Centre. The building now houses a 240-seat thrust theatre that includes a flyloft and tension wire grid. The auditorium geometry and finishes are optimised for the spoken word, even in the challenging thrust-stage configuration. The project includes a generous public foyer that connects the public circulation on campus with view of the river. Also included are technical theatre and drama teaching spaces.
