Two Feature Venues for Astana to Welcome the World

Astana Expo 2017

Project summary

Expo 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan, is a 174-hectare site designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, Chicago based architects. Amongst the retail, residential, leisure and educational development, is approximately 12,000 square metres of cultural facilities.

Charcoalblue undertook initial design work on the two indoor performance venues and the two outdoor spaces. The master-planning work for the outdoor venues included noise analysis to ensure that the two venues could operate simultaneously. Following this work we developed the theatre and acoustic design of the 1,000 seat Energy Hall to the detailed design stage.

The Energy Hall is a multi-tiered space that is suited for a wide range of performances from string quartets to musical theatre. The room is designed so that a small performance can be staged on the large forestage, while a larger event is being set up on the main stage behind a large acoustic door located on the proscenium.

Charcoalblue also provided acoustic design services through detailed design on the 3,000-seat Congress Centre which hosted the Expo opening ceremony in June 2017.
