...breathing new life into a 1960s brutalist icon

Southbank Centre, London

Project summary

Standing on the riverfront along from  the National Theatre, the Southbank Centre is an internationally-recognised centre of excellence for both the performing and visual arts. This project focuses on the West Wing, where architecturally, the buildings are a brutalist foil to the clean lines of the recently refurbished Royal Festival Hall.

Charcoalblue is working alongside Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios to renew the complex, and refurbish the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery. As a team we are exploring wider opportunities throughout the site for new performance spaces and upgrades to both the visitor experience and back of house accommodation.

Charcoalblue is providing full consultancy services, working closely with the Southbank Centre to replan the building, investigate additional seating in the two concert rooms and integrate new theatre systems across the entire centre.
